About Us
My friends call me Heidi. Born and raised in Beijing, I spent my childhood there watching and helping my Shanghaiese mother cook. I moved to Hong Kong when I was a teenager where I became interested in Cantonese cooking. My early adulthood was spent in the United States, where I graduated Columbia University, married an American, worked as a civil engineer, and had my first child. During those years, I bought my first cookbook and taught myself how to cook Western cuisine. Because of my unique experience in Beijing, Hong Kong and in the USA, I am fluent in Putonghua, Cantonese and English and my cooking repertoire includes Shanghaiese, Cantonese and various Western cuisines.
Ever since I was a young child, I have always had an interest in good food and a passion for cooking. I was interested in not only how food looks and tastes, but also how it was prepared and served - from finding the right ingredients, to cutting pieces to the right size and shape; to determining the best cooking method that brings out the best flavors, to finally presenting the dishes in the simplest and most elegant way.
I have been enjoying cooking for over 30 years. Although my cooking repertoire is international, my specialty is Shanghaiese and Cantonese dishes. I continue to enrich myself by researching good recipes in cook books and on the internet. I experiment with recipes and find just the right spices for my taste. I look forward to sharing my recipes with you.
Because I was born and grew up in Beijing, Putonghua is my mother tongue. I speak with the standard Putonghua accent. Combining my language ability and passion for cooking, I can offer a unique cooking class to young children in Putonghua. They can enjoy doing something they like while learning new Chinese vocabularies and practicing their Chinese in a natural, noncompetitive environment.
